December Writing

Prompts Kids Might Actually Like

I have to really push writing with my students. It isn't a naturally easy skill for most of the students I have had through the years. Here are some December writing prompts your students might enjoy.

December Murals

It's been a super busy time for me this school year so I am just getting around to posting again.  I wanted to tell you about some projects my students and I did with leveled readers. After we read our books (multiple exposures with word study) we some extension projects. I decided to do some hallway murals connected with the themes of those books. One of those books was titled, "A World of Homes". Students each chose a home from the book to draw and label. We added captions and also did a shared writing. The students loved this so much and asked if we could do birds for the next topic. Truly, I was flabbergasted. I had not mentioned birds to them whatsoever. More than one of the students chimed in their support of this topic so I went with it. This time the kids chose a bird from their home country to depict. We had to research the internet and I have to say that even with my small group of eight kids that this was a rather painstaking process but worth it in the end. We typed in the subjects on Google and added "for kids" with the search so that the links would be more kid-friendly. My students have varying levels of English acquisition so some sites were tricky. They took notes and then put those notes in a sequential order once they were done. The finished murals got many "shout-outs" from my principal, coaches and teachers. The kids took ownership in their own learning and we covered all four domains of listening, reading, speaking, and writing before the projects were complete. I would challenge those of you who teach English language learners to try this just once. I used to think of projects like this as all fluff and no content, but after having done them, I now see the value and it's all good.
